Some of the advice is counterintuitive. For example, if a student is faced with the prompt Give us an example of a quote which would apply to you and tell us how it applies, Concise Advice suggests a trick Don't try to think of a quote first and then write an essay around that quote. Take the essay you've already written and Google the word "quote" with some key words from the essay. In seconds, you'll have hundreds of quotes to choose from, all of which apply to that essay.
So, all in all, this is an extremely helpful book, and may make the process of writing an essay a lot easier and less stressful.

Who doesn't love the movies? In this book Robert Cronk uses the structure of a movie screenplay to help students create memorable college essays. It's a brilliant idea. When an engaging movie starts I sit back in my seat and can't wait for the action to unfold. That's what this book does for college admission essays. Cronk presents his ideas in a folksy easy to read format. I was able to sit down and read the entire book with a good cup of tea. It did not take long to understand that this approach will help any student to write a better essay. When my first child applied to college, I struggled to find him some examples of how to write a great essay. There are many other books that give essay examples. What is different about this one is that it provides a simple to use, yet very powerful structure that any kid can use, and it will only take them a short amount of time to catch on and be able to use these techniques themselves. Now that my second child is applying, I am happy to have found this book. He was rebelling against reading "another college book". He devoured this one in no time. If you love the movies, and the story arc; from anticipation, to building the plot to a great and memorable ending that stays with you... you will love this book. Robert Cronk's book is like the younger, franker cousin of On Writing the College Application Essay, 25th Anniversary Edition The Key to Acceptance at the College of Your Choice. Frank in the sense that every page will be of direct use to you. It feels as though you're having a talk with a college admission officer.
Periodically, Tufts, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, and Connecticut College would publish "essays that worked." I took this book and used it as a magnifying glass against such essays. I examined their structures and commonalities, and compared them with the advice given in Concise Advice. Everything lined up. Everything he recommended, they did.
This book will teach you exactly how to "show and not tell," through Cronk's strategy of thinking of the essay as a screenplay. He will show you how to illustrate your intellectual curiosity, resilience, confidence, or resourcefulness rather than simply telling the colleges you are these things. In here, you won't find long pages discussing various ways to outline or chunks of sections dedicated to talking about how important the essay is. You already know that. That's why you sought a book on writing the college essay. You'll find strategies on how to craft a piece of writing in your own voice. How to make your presence felt with words. How to avoid cliches and bad writing
1. Don't use fancy $10 words that you rarely use in ordinary speech.
2. Don't brag.
3. Don't try to find a formula for crafting the perfect essay.
4. Don't do too much whining or justifying.
Cronk will guide you through writing supplement essays as well ("Why this school?" and "Why this major?" essays)-- not just Common Application essays. This section I found particularly helpful.
The main idea is to be natural and specific.
I can't say this book will guarantee your acceptance in to First Choice college. There are too many variables involved. But I can guarantee that if you follow the advice here, your essay will profit rather than hinder you. As a senior pursuing acceptance in to a selective college, this book was exactly what I needed.
Got book for my current HS student. She already had an essay draft. However, after reading this book, she followed some suggestions and rearranged the essay. Wow, what a difference the suggestions from the book made on the essay. This should be on your must have list for essay writing.
Fantastic book, gives very easy to follow guidance with clear examples and a fairly structured framework within which to write an essay. Don't blindly follow the advice in the book, though, as it is sometimes too structured and predictable.
My daughter was feeling over whelmed by the multitude of essays and free response questions that were required on the Common Application and the individual supplements. This book not only helps students get prepared to write in a direct and simple manner, the step by step process helps them create unique and memorable essays that will stand out during the admission cycle. Some of the prompts out there today can perplex even the most intelligent of students and this book helps get to the core of what these Admission Committees want.
I found this gem when I was trying to nudge my reluctant daughter along as she plodded through her essay-writing exercise for the Common Application. Concise Advice puts the process into the correct perspective of how to "show rather than tell", which is not always easy for kids who have been taught for years to write formally. The other challenge was fitting the essay into the new 500 word format, which Mr. Cronk was able to help with via email support. I will definitely get the next edition for my second child when it's her turn to do college applications!
